Clear the Noise

There’s an exhaustion that has nothing to do with how much you’ve done. You can finish a day having achieved almost nothing and still feel wrung out — because the work wasn’t the work. The work was carrying everything at once.

Your mind is very good at thinking and very bad at holding. Ask it to hold forty-one open items — the unanswered message, the thing you said in 2019, the appointment, the argument, the vague sense you’ve forgotten something — and it won’t drop any of them. It will keep them all slightly warm, all day, at enormous cost, and then wonder why you can’t concentrate.

The aim here isn’t to do more. It’s to put things down. Some onto paper, where they can wait for you without needing to be held. Some permanently, because they were never yours.

Where it takes you:

  • The inventory — everything, out, in no order at all
  • The cull — what you’re never actually going to do, and what isn’t yours to carry
  • The quiet — building space, and then defending it

You’ll leave with: the signal, instead of the noise. You don’t need a new answer. You need it quiet enough to hear the one you already have.
