Nothing in this painting is sharp, and nothing in it is broken.
Look once and you see calm. Look again and you see what it cost. She is looking up, not out.
Rooted is a portrait of the moment after — after the disappointment, after the fear, after the version of yourself you had to put down in order to keep going. Her eyes are closed because what holds her up is no longer outside her.
The painting is built in deep indigo and plum, with rose and soft blue cutting across the face like light finding its way in. Gold is applied by hand throughout: it traces her jaw, runs down her throat, and grows past her shoulder as a single unbroken stem. That gold is not decoration. It marks the lessons she chose to carry instead of the wounds she chose to keep.
Above her, a crescent — waxing, not full. She is still becoming.
Look closely at her mouth. There is a smile there, so slight it is almost invisible. Not the smile of someone whose life is easy, but of someone who has found something no one can take from her.
She knows who she is.
Look closely at her shoulder. Every line there is curved, and not one of them comes to a point. She smoothed them herself, the way you round off an edge you have already cut yourself on, because she wanted to keep what happened to her without bleeding for it every time she remembered. That is what the shoulder holds: memory with the sharpness taken out. And from her throat a single gold line runs the whole length of her without once breaking, down past her chest, past her waist, past the bottom edge of the canvas. That is the root. It is why she bends instead of snapping. Something is holding at the other end of her, deeper than anyone can see, and it has never let go.
What is deeply rooted can bend with the wind, grow through the seasons, and bloom again — without ever forgetting what it is.
